Dick Scobee Receives State-Funded
Math Helping Corps Grant from OSPI
Dick Scobee Elementary School has received notice from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), that it has been selected to receive a state-funded Math Helping Corps grant. The selection process was highly competitive. Out of the many applicants, only six schools were chosen to have a site visit for an entire day. Out of those six, only two schools were selected to receive this grant.
The Math Helping Corps program provides an OSPI mathematics consultant to teach teachers new mathematics instructional skills at Dick Scobee Elementary for two full-days a week for the next two school years. In the classrooms, the consultant will teach new mathematics skills and concepts to the students while the classroom teachers observe and learn the instructional process. The consultant will help the classroom teachers integrate their mathematics instruction into other subject areas.
“The entire staff is excited for the opportunity to have an expert in the area of math instruction as a part of our team. With their assistance, the hard work of our staff, and the diligence of our students, we hope to realize great gains in the area of mathematics in years to come. We feel very fortunate to have been chosen for this grant,” said Greg Brown, principal of Dick Scobee Elementary School.
The 1999 legislature established the Washington Mathematics Helping Corps (MHC) as part of the K-12 Accountability and Assistance Act to provide assistance to elementary, middle, and junior high schools with low student performance in mathematics.
