First WSPTA Outstanding Advocate Award
Given to Pat Montgomery of Auburn

At the General Session at the Washington State PTA convention held on Saturday, May 7, in Tukwila the presentation of the first WSPTA Outstanding Advocate Award was made to Pat Montgomery of Auburn.

Mr. Montgomery has volunteered in many different ways to support Auburn School District and public schools across the state. He has volunteered in the PTA organization at the local, council, and regional level. For many years, he volunteered in the PTA legislative process, serving as the Hazelwood Elementary School legislative representative and the Auburn Council Legislation Chair. He dedicated his time as the Region Nine Legislation Chair while continuing to serve as the school representative at Terminal Park Elementary and Rainier Middle School. He spearheaded the Initiative 728 campaign in the Auburn community and has helped develop Washington State PTA legislative initiatives. Mr. Montgomery has made many phone calls and created many flyers to raise awareness and fill PTA legislative positions.

Mr. Montgomery often volunteers for budget and audit committees and has served on council nominating committees. Mr. Montgomery has lent his technology expertise to PTA matters. In his first Council position as Technology Chair, he helped local units with email lists and other computer issues such as developing the Council Listserv. For many years, he keyed in the long lists of Council Reflections participant names, creating the database that generated notification letters and certificates.

Though Mr. Montgomery’s main focus has been legislation, he has generously donated his time to other areas as well. He has worked in his children’s classrooms since his oldest was in kindergarten. Teachers know they can call him at the last minute if they have some emergency need.

Mr. Montgomery works with the League of Education Voters and is also well known for his well-informed letters to the editor in local newspapers regarding educational matters. In May 2004, the Auburn School Board of Directors honored Mr. Montgomery with the Gold Star Volunteer Recognition Award for his outstanding service to public education.
