The
King County Library System's Database, Biography
Resource Center, is an excellent source for online biographical
information. It requires a KCLS library card number.
Electronic encyclopedias. e.g.
Microsoft Encarta, Grolier Online, and Worldbook Online, will
also have biographical information on historical people.
For
contemporary figures, InfoTrac and ProQuest will have periodical
articles in the last three years.
The
free sites below on the Internet may also be useful. Lastly, you
can of course use a search engine.
Be sure to evaluate
the site and information for accuracy.

Years of Women in Science
4000 Years of Women in Science includes biographies of women from
antiquity to the present, but emphasizes women scientists form
the past. Biographies can be accessed alphabetically, from a time-ordered
list, and from a field-of-study list.
A&E's
Biography Database (Biography.com)
A&E has a searchable database of more than 15,000 names of
some of the world's greatest individuals, past and present. You
can choose from an alphabetical listing, select a letter, or enter
a name to search. Entries are from the Cambridge Biographical
Encyclopedia. Entries are brief, usually no more than 100 words.
African
American Inventor Database
Welcome to the Great Lakes Patent and Trademark Center's African-American
Inventors Database! This database contains information from several
published sources on notable African-American inventors and their
patents. Inventor name, title of invention, patent number and
patent issue date are included in each record.
Biographical
Dictionary
The Biographical Dictionary contains more than 18,000 entries
of notable men and women from ancient times to the present day.
Information includes birth and death years, professions, positions
held, literary and artistic works, and other achievements. The
dictionary is searchable by name, date, or keyword.
Biographies
of Historical Persons Related to American History
From Revolution to Reconstruction, a WWW project of collective
writing in hypertext, provides more than 80 online biographies
of historical persons related to American history, including extensive
biographies on John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton,
and Andrew Jackson, as well as autobiographies of Frederick Douglass
and Geronimo. This is a good beginning resource for students researching
the founding fathers and members of the Continental Congress.
Biographies
of Mathematicians
Chronological indexes range from 1680 BC to AD 1947. There is
also a full alphabetical index. Mathematicians of the Day is a
section that highlights mathematicians who were born or died on
the current date, with links to their individual biographies.
There is a separate section on female mathematicians. The entire
database is searchable. Most biographies are accompanied by a
photograph, a map showing where the mathematician was born, a
reference list to books and articles, links to other mathematicians,
and sometimes links to other web sites for more information.

by students in mathematics classes at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta,
Georgia to illustrate the many achievements of women in mathematics.

Biographical sketches are available for current, former, and deceased
NASA astronauts. The Astronaut Factbook (in PDF format requiring
Adobe Acrobat Reader) is available for downloading, and has everything

Using images from the National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian
Institution has created an excellent biography Web site for famous
and not-so-famous American artists and athletes, soldiers and
scientists, inventors and social reformers, and other interesting
people. Each biography is tow to three paragraphs long, and in-text
links connect the reader to relevant pages within the Smithsonian's
Web site.

Women
of NASA
One of the goals of the Women of NASA project is to provide a
resource for teachers and others interested in learning more about
gender bias in math and science and methods of teaching that reduce
inequity in the classroom. More than 45 women are profiled in
Women of NASA. In addition, students can follow the daily routines
of various NASA women through their online journal entries.
