Direct Search (This Link now longer works, and am checking for an updated link - 7/23/2002)
Direct Search is a growing compilation of links to the search interfaces of resources that contain data not easily or entirely searchable/accessible from general search tools like Alta Vista, Google, and HotBot. Although general search tools are essential for the retrieval of Internet based data, often many do not realize that large amounts of information are not easily searchable and accessible via these search tools. This "hidden" from "general search tool" material has become known as the "invisible web".

Invisible Web (Deep Searching Databases)
Deep Searching is a term that refers to the ability to search Internet databases and directories. Most Internet search engines are not able to search these. This is why it is estimated that traditional search engines can only find less than a quarter of the information on the Internet. It is now estimated that one million pages are added to the Internet daily. Below are Internet search engines that claim to be able to delve deeper into the Internet. More background information can be found searching on the term "invisible web."

Meta Search Engines
Meta search engines search other search engines, and deliver the top hits. They not scour the entire site, however and therefore are not appropriate for in-depth academic research. Many sites that started out as just spiders, directories, or meta-search engines now have incorporated other functions. Google, the current Grand-Daddy of search engines, technically does not fit into any of these catagories.
