Nixie Van Selus Selected as First Recipient of the
Betty Smith "Spirit of Education" Award

Long-time community volunteer, Nixie Van Selus, was selected as the first recipient of the Betty Smith “Spirit of Education” award for her 35 years of service to the students of West Auburn High School. Mrs. Van Selus has volunteered in the school’s teen parent program, contributing countess hours in the Family and Consumer Science classes. She has also served on the program’s advisory board. The Cities and Schools Forum which is comprised of Auburn School District; the cities of Auburn, Algona, and Pacific; Green River Community College; and the Muckleshoot Tribe created the award to recognize community volunteers in memory of Betty Smith who served as an Auburn School director for 12 years and as a school counselor for Tacoma School District for 30 years.
