Dick Scobee Elementary
Celebrates 50 Years

Dick Scobee Elementary School will be celebrating its 50th birthday on Wednesday, December 3, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Dick Scobee Elementary, 1031 14th St. N.E., is located north of the Auburn downtown area.  The school’s staff and students have planned this evening event and are inviting all past and present students, staff, administration, and families to attend.  A short program as well as a tour of the school will be part of the evening.  Refreshments will be served.  Individuals are encouraged to contact the school office at (253) 931-4984 by Monday, December 1 if they are interested in attending.

Dick Scobee Elementary School was originally built in 1954 as North Auburn Elementary and opened its doors to students on Saturday, November 29, 1954 with Esther Ott as its first principal.  In 1982, the school was renovated.  In 1987, it was renamed Dick Scobee Elementary in memory of Challenger astronaut, Commander Dick Scobee, who was a graduate of Auburn High School.  In 1989, Dick Scobee Elementary was selected by the U.S. Department of Education as a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.
