NEWS RELEASE
Auburn School District Students Earn 2,168
College Credits Through South King County Tech Prep

In Auburn School District, during the 2002–2003 school year, 316 high school students in the Auburn School District earned a total of 2,168 college credits through the South King County Tech Prep program while still attending their high schools.  These credits were earned through completion of high school courses articulated to a community college or technical college program.  This unique program known as Tech Prep, allows students to jump-start their college education without ever leaving their high school.  Tech Prep is a college preparatory program that prepares students with the skills and abilities needed by business and industry.  Students must earn a “B” grade or better in the high school class, and demonstrate mastery of the course competencies.

An additional advantage to the Tech Prep program is that students do not pay for the college credits they earned. A $15.00 one-time transcript fee is all that is involved.  With the cost of a college credit averaging about $66.00 per credit,  Auburn students in this program saved a combined total of over $143,000 in college expenses during the 2002-2003 school year.
