Start-up Information for the 2009-10 Academic Year

September 2, 2009

Dear Student:

On behalf of West Auburn High School staff members, I welcome you to the 2009-10 school year! We look forward to helping you set and attain educational goals. I am pleased to share with you that we have many new program options available for the 2009-10 year. It is the hope of the entire staff to help students reach academic goals and earn credits as quickly as possible. This letter contains important information; be sure you read the entire letter.

The first day of school is Wednesday, September 9. This is a required attendance day; you will be attending all your regularly scheduled classes. If you do not attend school September 9, you will be withdrawn and when you re-enroll, classes you would like to take may be full or the program you wish to be in may be on “waiting list” status.

Students will meet with an advisor for schedule confirmation before reporting to first period. All students (day program, learning center, Virginia Cross Native Education Center, and virtual) will report to their respective program according to the schedule provided below. Be sure you attend September 9.

Program Report Time

Day and Virtual 8 a.m.

Learning Center 8 a.m.

Virginia Cross 9 a.m.

If you will be attending at another school during the 2009-10 year, please contact our registrar, Cris Cruickshank, to let her know where you will be attending so she can inactivate you on the computer and prepare your records for staff at your new school.

We are enthusiastic about the changes taking place at West Auburn and about starting another great year. I am pleased to be serving as your principal again and it will be a honor to welcome staff members and students to the new school year on Wednesday, September 9! Remember, if you do not attend and confirm your schedule you will be inactivated. Should you wish to return to West Auburn, you will need to complete the re-enrollment/registration process.

Sincerely,

Brad L. Sprague

General Information— West Auburn High School —2009-10

ASB Card—ASB cards are purchased from the principal’s secretary/office manager in the main office.  ASB board members are elected by students to represent students.  Officers work with an advisor to maintain the ASB budget, plan student activities, and help develop a positive image at school and within the community.

Annual/Yearbook—Candid and posed student photographs appear in the yearbook.  Staff photos and pictorial pages help students recapture memories of special events years after leaving high school.  Announcements about cost and when annuals may be purchased (from the principal’s secretary/office manager in the main office) are made as soon as the information is available.

Attendance—Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes.  When a student is absent, a parent/guardian may clear excused absences by calling the school the day of the absence, or the absence may be cleared (within 24 hours of the student returning from an absence) in writing by the parent/guardian.  Absence and/or late arrival for reasons such as oversleeping, transportation problems, late arrival to class, etc., are not excused.

CD, iPod, Mp3, Portable DVD, etc., Players and/or Laser Devices—Equipment of this nature is not permitted in the school building.  Laser devices are not allowed at school.  Audio equipment used for educational purposes is provided through the audio-visual equipment center.

Cell Phones/Pagers—Although there may be a unique situation that allows a student to carry a cell phone or pager with administrative approval, in general, students are not to have cell phones and/or pagers (beepers) at school.  Cell phones are not to be used during class time.  If a student uses a phone or pager to send or receive a call or message during class time, the phone/pager may be confiscated (even if the student has permission to have the phone/pager at school).

Closed Campus West Auburn High School students have the privilege of leaving campus at lunch as long as all district and school building rules and regulations are followed—including returning to class on time.  Students are to remain on campus, once they arrive at school, until officially excused for the day.  Students who leave campus without following proper check-out procedures may be subject to disciplinary consequences and, if a late arrival or absence occurs as a result of leaving campus, the tardy or absence will be unexcused.  Students are expected to represent themselves and the school in a positive way in the community, and are not permitted off campus to smoke.  The privilege to leave campus may be revoked at the request of the parent or advisor, or if the student’s behavior is not appropriate.

Credits—Students need a minimum of 22.5 credits in specific subject areas in order to graduate from an Auburn high school.  In order to be considered on track with credits, students in the following grades should have the number of credits listed:

Credits Earned                 Grade Level                                    Credits Earned                     Grade Level

                        9........................................... 0 to 4.49                                    11...................................... 10.5 to 15.49

                        10.................................... 4.5 to 10.49                                    12........................................ 15.5 and up

Dress Code—Dress and/or appearance that may cause disruption of the educational process or present a health or safety problem will not be permitted.  Bare midriffs are not permitted; students’ appearance should be neat and clean, and clothing should not be excessively revealing (short or low-cut tops, low-rise pants, mini skirts or shorts, off-the-shoulder shirts, tank-tops, etc.).  Gang-apparent colors and/or insignias, etc., are prohibited in the school setting.  Clothing and/or accessories (including purses, packs, jewelry, notebooks, etc.) may not by printed word, symbol, or display, promote alcohol, drugs, profanity, tobacco, sex, gang behavior, nudity, and/or violence, and may not disrupt the educational climate.  Students may not wear hats or head coverings (including bandanas, head wraps, caps, scarves, and visors), or sun (colored/tinted) glasses in the building.

Fines/Fees—Class/lab fees and/or fines are paid/cleared with the principal’s secretary/office manager in the main office.  Student records (including grades, transcript, and diploma) may not be released if a student has an outstanding fine/fee.

Late Arrival (tardy)/Leaving Early—Late arrival to class (more than five minutes) will not be excused.  Students arriving late must check in through the office for an admit slip.  Prior to a student being released from school early, contact with and permission from the parent/guardian must be obtained.  The absence of a student who leaves school during the scheduled school day without parent/guardian contact with office staff, will be unexcused and the student may be subject to disciplinary consequences.

Meals—Breakfast can be picked up at the kitchen counter (in the commons) before school.  Lunches may be ordered at the kitchen counter before school.  Application forms for reduced-price or free meals are available in the main office at the school.

Medication at School—By law, written authorization and instructions for administering any medication (over-the-counter and/or prescription medications) to students at school must be on file in the health room.  If a student must take medication during school hours, the authorization form needs to be completed and the medication (in the original container) must be brought to the main office.

Students are not to have medication in their possession while on school grounds except to deliver medication to the office (as described above).  Certain exceptions may apply (such as permission to carry an inhaler).  An on-call nurse who is usually on campus one day per week, is assigned to West Auburn .  For health or medication questions that may affect the educational process, contact a member of the office staff so a nurse can be paged.

Smoking—Use of tobacco and tobacco products is not permitted on any school property or at school-sponsored events.  A student who is in possession of tobacco or a tobacco product will have the product confiscated and destroyed, and the student may be subject to disciplinary consequences.  A student who uses tobacco or tobacco products on school district property or in an area immediately adjacent to the school will be subject to disciplinary action.  Students are not permitted off campus to smoke.

Supplies—Students* are expected to have basic school supplies available each day of attendance.  Basic supplies include notebook, paper, pencils, pens, glue (or glue stick).  If additional supplies are needed, the instructor will notify the student.  (*Virtual students will supply a three-ring binder/notebook with at least a two-inch spine, a set of dividers, and one ream of white, unlined copy paper.  These items will be left at the school.)

Visitors—All visitors must check in at the main office upon arrival at West Auburn .  In order to avoid disrupting instructional time, please pre-arrange visits with teaching staff.  Pre-approval of guests who wish to accompany a West Auburn student to a dance or other school activity must be arranged through the main office.

Withdrawing a Student—The signature of a parent/guardian is required (for any student under the age of 18) for withdrawal unless verification that the student has enrolled in another school has been received, or the student is being inactivated due to failure to comply with program requirements.
