Learn about the Giant Panda!

The panda starts off as a baby, like any other animal. As a baby panda cub at birth, it weighs 100 to 200 grams and measures 15 to 17 centimeters or 6 to 7 inches long. As it grows up fully to a Giant Panda, a female can weigh as little as 75 kg (170 lb), but can weigh as big as 125 kg (280 lb). A male panda can weigh all the way up to 160 kg (350 lb)!

The panda's thick, wooly, black and white coat keeps it warm in the cool forests of it's habitat. It has large molar teeth and strong jaw muscles for crushing and eating tough bamboo. The panda's paw has a thumb and five fingers: the thumb is actually a modified sesamoid bone, which helps it to hold bamboo while eating.
