The ASD is implementing a cell-phone-free learning environment beginning in the 25-26 school year. Students use of personal electronic devices (PED) will be prohibited during instructional time. PEDs include, but are not limited to, cell phones, smart watches, ear buds and headphones.

This change is based on research showing that reducing phone use improves focus, academic performance, social connections and reduces bullying. We are committed to creating classrooms where students thrive distraction-free.

In the spring of 2025, the district surveyed families, students and staff about cell phone use. The District Technology Advisory Committee reviewed the survey responses, evaluated research and developed the recommendation to the School Board for the revised personal electronic device policy that was approved in August 2025. Revised Policy 3245

Research shows a relationship between social media use and poor sleep quality, reduced sleep duration, sleep difficulties and depression among youth.

75 percent of Auburn School District students reported seeing other students using cell phones for inappropriate videotaping.

Exceptions may be made to the above in the event of an emergency situation that involves imminent physical danger or a school administrator authorizes students to use a device and students who have it written into their individual education program (IEP) or individual health plan.

The ASD provides all required technology for students. Our school offices are fully-staffed to answer phone calls should an emergency arise and families need to contact their student.

Each school will be working on the details of how the cell-phone-free learning environment will be implemented. School-specific information is communicated by school principals.
