Below is a poem written by students who attended the Y.E.S. student leadership conference.
In my one beat…..
I am a leader.
In my one beat I am made of different races.
In my one beat I am a hard worker.
I am a black, beautiful, powerful, hardworking, amazing person. I love my roots.
I am a Hispanic, loving, caring person.
In my one beat diversity is something we need to embrace.
In my one beat my friends cause the fire in me.
In my one beat my medicine is my voice and the difference I can make when I speak out about my passions and beliefs.
In my one beat being different is the only thing we all have in common
In my one beat I can feel myself stepping up to make a change…
In my one beat I can feel my worries evaporating into thin air.
In my one beat I am athletic and I feel helpful.
In my one beat I am Filipino. I come from a country of islands connected, not divided, by the ocean between them. We are a country that stands together in times of destruction, war and devastation. We are a country of optimism in the face of poverty.
In my one beat the medicine I give is joy.
In my one beat I spread the light that God wants me to be.
In my one beat the healing I give is prayer.
In my one beat, I uplift people with my courage and hope.
In my one beat, I continue to never give up when times get hard for me and other people.
In my one beat, how can I, will I, reach all of my kids? My kids not by birth but by my choice to lead, teach and mold in 52, 46, or 32 minutes of time daily.
In my one beat I face mountains of lessons to teach and skills to give students….In my one beat I reach out and find a community to support, encourage, and uplift us all.
In my one beat, I am not alone.
In OUR one beat, we are Cascade.
