    Greetings Lake View Families!

What a Difference a Month Makes: Last month I wrote to you all about the upcoming five week stretch for our kids and how critical it was for learning. I also wrote to you advocating for maximized school attendance for all students saying “Every Minute Matters!” While those things are still true and valid, they no longer seem to be as essential as they were a few short weeks ago. More essential needs have risen such as ensuring the health of our families, maintaining a steady income, and putting food on the table. Many families are suddenly facing the seemingly impossible task of balancing work from home with supporting children in online instruction. I fully acknowledge the challenges that many of you are facing and understand that education may not be the current priority in your family. More basic needs have become the priority and that is ok. It is important that we acknowledge this and cut ourselves a break!

Not Homeschool!  I want to be clear that I am not asking you to homeschool your child, nor should you ask that of yourself! It is unrealistic considering our current circumstances. We are also not currently attempting to provide a comprehensive distance learning program for our students. We are attempting to provide educational activities that enrich the current school closure situation. These activities are a review of previously taught concepts and an opportunity to practice some of our foundational skills. We are not introducing new learning at this time, rather we are trying to maintain current academic levels. We want those skills to remain sharp so we can hit the ground running when school reopens!

Maintaining Relationships! Our team priority is to maintain relationships with our students and families throughout the closure. This involves intentional communication from our teachers to all students and families. We are trying to be very mindful to not overwhelm families with too much communication, but also communicate enough so that you all know we are here to support you. I have tasked teachers with the challenge of finding this balance and making it our priority. Thanks for understanding this effort and please offer feedback to your teacher on the frequency and clarity of our communication.

Structure and Engagement! With all of the above being said, it would serve students well to maintain a consistent routine and structure to their day. Wake up times, getting dressed, meal times, learning times, and play times are all important things to consider. If possible, please encourage your student to log in to his or her Google Classroom daily and engage in the activities provided.
