• Separation of Employment Web Banner

We are sorry to hear that you are leaving the Auburn School District.

To process your resignation or retirement, the Separation of Employment form must be completed.

We encourage you to review the information provided below,
prior to submitting your notice, to ensure a smooth separation process.

Thank you for your support and contributions to our district. We wish you the best on your future endeavors.

Your Separation Date Matters

  • What is a Work Year:
A work year is defined as the completion of your scheduled work calendar. Depending on your position, this may be the end of the school year, the end of June, or the end of August. Your HR Strand Specialist will be happy to work with you to determine the last day of your work year. Contact Human Resources at (253) 931-4916 or via email, Human Resources

Separation Prior to the End of Your Work Year for All Employees:
Your separation date is the last day that you worked or used approved leave. If you separate before the end of your work year, your benefits will end on the last day of the month that you separate.

Separation at the End of Your Work Year:

    Classified Employees:
If your work year has been completed, you can choose to extend your benefits to the end of August.

    AEA Certificated Employees:
Per your bargained agreement: "When an employee eligible for SEBB benefits separates from employment after the completion of the employee's full school year contract obligations, the separation will be effective August 31 unless the employee terminates the employment relationship with a specific earlier date. In this case, eligibility for the employer contribution ends on the last day of the month in which the school employee's resignation is effective."

Benefit Information

  • Your benefits are affected by your separation date. SEBB benefits will end on the last day of the month of your separation, per state law.

Things to know for Benefits when you Resign or Retire:
If your work year ends at the end of the school year, please review this video on things to find out about benefits when you resign or retire. This video will discuss the impact of your separation date, COBRA, retiree insurance, MetLife portability, and the options to accelerate FSA contributions.

Please review SEBB's information regarding When Eligibility for Benefits Ends. To learn about insurance options after resignation or retirement, please view the Continuation Coverage (COBRA) video and the PEBB Retiree Insurance video. These videos also provide information on MetLife Portability and options to accelerate FSA contributions.

It is more common for school year staff to choose the August 31 date if they need their benefits transferred to another Washington State school district in the new school year.

For additional questions about benefits, please contact Cheryl Matava, ASD Benefits Specialist.

DRS Retirement Information

  • What does retiring mean? Retiring means you are separating from employment and retiring, meaning, you are going to collect a pension from the Department of Retirement Systems. Retirement dates are always the 1st of whatever month you choose.

(Please note that retiring from the school Department of Retirement Systems is different from retiring through the Social Security Administration office. These are two separate retirement funds.)

Upon separation from employment with Auburn School District, please take note of the following for your retirement plan:
If you were working in an eligible position and contributing to retirement, your money is in your account with the Department of Retirement Systems and can only be withdrawn by contacting them directly at 1-800-547-6657.

Please consider the following when withdrawing your contributions:

    • If you are a Plan 2 member and withdraw your contributions, you are forfeiting your pension.
    • If you are a Plan 3 member and vested, and decide to withdraw your contributions, you will be decreasing your pension amount when you are eligible to retire. Withdrawing your contributions before you are vested as a Plan 3 member forfeits your pension.

If you officially retire with the Department of Retirement Systems, remember that you cannot work for any public service employer for 30 days after your retirement date. If you return to work within this 30-day window, your pension benefits will be penalized.

If you are resigning and/or retiring and would like more information on your retirement plan, you can contact either DRS at 1-800-547-6657 or Raquel Torres, ASD Retirement Specialist, for an appointment.
