Hearing and Vision Screening Information
Washington State law (WAC 246-760) requires schools to conduct auditory and visual screenings for students in grades TK, K, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7. Students may also be screened in the following situations:
- Teachers/staff communicate a concern
- Students are being evaluated for special services
- 3 year re-evaluations
The Auburn School District makes every effort to complete these screenings in the first half of the school year. Each school has a designated screening day which will be communicated out to families by your school when it is approaching. Screening is completed by the Auburn School District Staff, coordinated by the School Nurse.
Vision screening may be completed using the SPOT/Plus Optix tool, LEA symbols, HOTV letter, or Sloan letter vision chart. Students who wear corrective lenses are screened with their lenses on. Referral information will be sent to the families of any student who does not pass school-based screenings.
Hearing screening is done using equipment providing tonal stimuli. Students who do not pass the initial hearing test are re-screened at a minimum of 2 weeks after the initial screening. Referral information will be sent to the families of any student who does not pass the second screening.
If you have any questions regarding the results of your child’s screening or the screening process, please contact the school nurse.
If you do not wish your child screened for either hearing or vision, please contact your school nurse.
