Important Note: Any unpaid leave of absence, including PFML, may affect salary placement, retirement service credits, and SEBB eligibility. Refer to your collective bargaining agreement (CBA) or your Human Resources strand specialist if you have questions about salary placement.
Important Note: All medical paperwork must be turned in before your leave may be approved.
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) - Federal
FMLA provides eligible employees with unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons. A serious health condition is an illness, injury, impairment, or physical or mental condition that involves inpatient care of continuing treatment by a health care provider.Paid Family & Medical Leave (PFML) – WA State
Paid Family and Medical Leave is a mandatory statewide insurance program that will provide paid time off to give or receive care.Maternity Leave
A staff member may use accumulated, paid sick leave for the period of actual disability attributable to pregnancy or childbirth.Paternity Leave / Family Bonding
Emergency leave entitles male employees to the same leave that is available to female employees upon the birth or adoption of the employee’s child.Bereavement Leave
Bereavement leave may be granted for family members or close friends.Educational Leave
Educational leave allows employees unpaid leave while they complete their student teaching program.Once-in-a-Lifetime Leave
Leave without pay may be granted for once-in-a-lifetime situations.Domestic Violence Leave
Washington State provides victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, the opportunity to take time off from work. This leave is available to all employees and qualifying family members.Shared Leave
Employees can donate accrued leave to another qualified employee who has exhausted their paid leave balance while continuing to experience (or caring for a family member who is experiencing) a severe or extraordinary condition, or life-threatening illness or injury, which may cause the employee to take leave without pay or terminate employment.Leave of Absence
